Japanese merchant ship mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced its intention to install an augmented reality (AR) navigation system developed by FurunoElectric and MOL techno-trade on its 21 VLCC supertankers.

The system can display on a tablet or screen information about other ships in a planned route, as well as information about surrounding seas and other sea conditions, such as shallow water.Real-time video images from the ship automatic identification system (AIS), radar information and bridge camera are combined to work with the The ancient wild electricadvanced electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) FMD3300 series .

The system USES AR technology to overlay real-time video images and navigation information to provide visual support for crew on duty and during ship operations.

The system has been installed for demonstration testing of the first-generation MOL new generation FLEXIE series car carrier Beluga Ace delivered in March 2018 and the VLCCSuzukasan delivered in October 2018.

MOL will continue to improve the AR display and verify the effectiveness of the system. In the Furuno Electric system, which is officially commercialized, it will be installed in MOL's VLCC fleet, a type of ship that requires the highest operational safety, with the goal of achieving a greater margin of safety.

Due to the depth of its draft, the VLCC needs to be particularly careful when navigating the Singapore strait and the waters of malacca, a heavily trafficked sea lane with limited area.

Project partners developed systems to support crews, alert them to other ships they need to see, shallow water areas, and so on, by displaying integrated real-time video images of information from navigational instruments on the bridge's screen. The system will further enhance MOL's Marine technology skills and move the company toward its goal of becoming a "world leader in safe operations."

MOL will install the system in sequence in its energy transport fleet, including LNG carriers, and in its dry bulk carriers, to provide greater support for seafarers' lookout and ship operations during the voyage and to continue to improve and enhance their efficiency. In addition, MOL expects the technology to play a key role in achieving autonomous ship navigation in the future.

MOL put forward advanced support for safe operation and environmental impact reduction in the "ship maintenance -- MOL smart ship project" which started in November 2016, aiming to become the preferred logistics partner for customers to improve service quality and efficiency by applying ICT technology.
